National Trust urges walkers to be careful along Marsden Bay in South Shields after cliff collapse

The National Trust is asking members of the public to be careful after part of a cliff collapsed in South Tyneside.

On Saturday afternoon, a dog walker captured on video the moment a section of a cliff edge tumbled onto the beach at Marsden Bay, in South Shields.

Samantha Lawson described how she had been walking her dog, alongside her partner Lewis Wilkinson, when they saw part of the cliff crumble.

They alerted the authorities and put out a warning on Facebook, urging people to be careful in the area.

Now the National Trust has reiterated that warning and says people should remain a safe distance away from the cliff base.

Eric Wilton, National Trust general manager for the South of Tyne property group, said: "We were made aware of a cliff fall at Marsden Bay on Saturday.

"Our ranger team monitors the cliffs along The Leas on a regular basis, but it’s impossible to predict exactly when falls will occur.

"Cliff falls are a natural occurrence and most common in winter, when cycles of wet weather, freezing and thawing cause cracks in the rocks.

"Luckily nobody was hurt this time, but they can happen in seconds, without warning. We’d urge members of the public to take care when visiting the coast.

"Please pay attention to safety signage, don’t cross the safety barrier when using cliff top paths, never try to climb up or down the cliffs and always remain a safe distance from the cliff base when on the beach.

"Anyone who sees somebody in danger on the coast should dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."

A similar warning has been issued by North Tyneside Council asking walkers to stay away from a cliffside in Whitley Bay.

This came after a landslip near the Whitley Bay Mini Golf and FootGolf site. A footpath in the area has been closed to the public.

The council says the ground is still saturated and there could be further movement. The authority is monitoring the situation.
