National Trust ‘shocked’ as Sycamore Gap tree sapling stolen from castle grounds

  • A sapling grown from the felled Sycamore Gap tree has been stolen from Wray Castle in Cumbria , having been planted just two months prior.
  • The National Trust expressed its shock and sadness over the theft, which occurred between 9 June and 16 June, and has appealed for the sapling's return.
  • Cumbria Police are investigating the incident, with the National Trust working alongside them to gather information.
  • This particular sapling was one of 15 planted across UK National Parks, symbolising hope and resilience, and was part of a wellbeing initiative.
  • The original Sycamore Gap tree, a famous landmark, was illegally felled in 2023, an act that led to the imprisonment of two individuals.
