National Trust set to buy childhood homes of stars like Freddie Mercury and David Bowie

The National Trust is set to swap castles for the childhood homes of stars including the likes of Freddie Mercury and David Bowie .

Bosses claim fans want to see places where “real people” grew up, and believe the move will be applauded by visitors.

Trust chairman Tim Parker said: “The trust has succeeded where it has anticipated future needs well.

“I am absolutely sure some terraced houses will be more preponderant in the future and people will go and see houses where real people grew up.”

The trust, which turns 125 years old this year, manages more than 300 buildings.

However it admits it's unlikely to pick up more mansions as rich people snap them up.

The trust runs tours around Beatles’ legends Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon’s childhood terraces in Liverpool, but hopes to expand to other celeb icons' homes.

David Bowie's childhood home is also set to be bought by the National Trust (Redferns)

Mr Parker, ex-boss of Kwik Fit, said: “People are interested in the aristocracy, but there’s also perhaps an even greater interest in how real people lived.

“You can see that in stately homes, where we opened servants’ quarters and kitchens.”

Many British celebs grew up in ordinary homes before going on to achieve what they have in their careers.

The trust is hoping to gain ownership of more of these homes to show to the public.
