National Trust holding crunch meetings today with thousands of staff over cost cutting plans

Thousands of National Trust staff are in crunch meetings this afternoon as the heritage body reveals the result of a major review into its costs.

The charity has been badly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic - which forced it to close its sites for four months.

It has scaled back projects that were scheduled to take place in the financial year of 20/21 in order to save money but is still facing a cash shortfall.

It has been reported that more than 200 jobs could be at risk.

Staff say that a major meeting is taking place this afternoon as a 45 day consultation comes to a close.

Some sites closed early today due to the meetings.

James Brown posted on Twitter: "Well today is going to be a long one!

"Choices, choices and choices being made to try & balance heritage, finances and futures that will have wide reaching consequences.

"Thinking of all my National Trust colleagues, most of you who I have never met and trying to stay optimistic."

Earlier this month a spokeswoman told Business Live: "We are currently undergoing a full review of all our costs which involves analysing projects and operating expenditure which includes pay.

"It is too early to speculate about the level of redundancies.

"We are in the process of working our way through this and will be keeping our staff and stakeholders informed as we work."
