'National treasure Captain Sir Tom Moore is in all our hearts'

Uniting the captured hearts of an entire nation last year inspirational Captain Sir Tom Moore now has the thoughts of a whole country united in sending him best wishes after his admission to hospital with the coronavirus.

The extraordinary centenarian, a 100-year-old fundraising machine who collected more than £30 million for NHS charities, was a symbol of hope in those dark days of 2020 when a virus vaccine felt a frighteningly long way off.

Testing positive for Covid-19 following treatment for pneumonia, his family’s faith in the NHS staff and Bedford Hospital, where he’s requiring help with his breathing, is another cause for hope.

Because the dignified Army veteran, who aimed to raise £1,000 walking in his Bedfordshire garden during the first lockdown, is truly a national treasure who is cherished by so many.

The vaccine doses given to a record near-600,000 is encouraging evidence the NHS is gathering speed in the largest mass inoculation programme in the health service’s venerable history.

We may be over the recent worst, although people regrettably continue to die in their hundreds every day.

Sir Tom is the embodiment of togetherness, says the Voice of the Mirror (Getty)

Sir Tom is the embodiment of a togetherness, an uplifting community spirit, which demonstrates why we must look out
for each other as well as ourselves.

That’s why millions of people who feel they know him personally despite never meeting Sir Tom are at this very moment collectively willing a full and speedy recovery to an incredibly special old soldier.
