National security tip-off in Canberra leads to man's arrest

Police searched the rear of a home in the Canberra suburb of Griffith on Tuesday.

A tip-off to the National Security Hotline and a raid of a home in Canberra's south yesterday has landed a 28-year-old man in court, with the chief magistrate immediately sending him for a mental health assessment.

ACT police said the man was facing several "serious charges" including threatening to act with intent to cause public harm, possessing an object to kill or inflict grievous bodily harm, and using social media to menace, harass or offend.

But, during a brief appearance in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning, Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker declined to read the charges aloud after considering a report on the man's case.

Instead she referred him for a mental health assessment.

The man was arrested after police seized a number of items from his home in the suburb of Griffith on Tuesday.

Detective Superintendent Scott Moller said there were other people in the home at the time, but he would not comment on specific details of the ongoing investigation.

He said police had not identified a specific target of the alleged offences.

"I would like to stress at this time that there was no evidence to suggest that this man was working with anybody else or within a group," Detective Superintendent Moller said.

"I would also like to reassure the community at this time that ACT Policing is working with our partners and we'll continue to pursue all available information.

"At this time there does not appear to be any ongoing threat to the community."

No return date has been given for the man's next court appearance.
