National park's mystical trail lets you walk amongst its treetops and clouds

Walking above the treetops amidst the clouds sounds like the start of a fairytale, but one national park offers visitors the chance to do just that.

That's because the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica doesn't offer ordinary walking trails.

Instead, its trails consist of suspended bridges where you can wander high above the treetops.

On clear days, this means uninterrupted views of the lush, dense green rainforest.

However, the region is prone to foggy weather - and when this happens, it adds a mystical atmosphere as the fogs tend to hover amidst the upper canopy, meaning that as you walk along the trails you can be surrounded by the misty clouds.

In fact, it's hailed as one of the best things to see and do in Costa Rica.

Back on the ground, there's heaps more to discover.

Monteverde hosts 2.5% of the world's biodiversity, not to mention it's home to half of Costa Rica's plant and animal species.

We're talking over 100 species of mammals and 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles alone.

It's particularly popular with birdwatchers thanks to the abundance of colourful and exotic species - there are around 400 - which live amidst the green trees and shrubs.

No wonder it regularly features on lists of Costa Rica's best national parks and reserves.

The reserve was established in 1972 and initially spanned 810 acres, however nowadays it covers over 35,089 acres and is divided into eight 'zones'.

There are plenty of walking trails and paths to explore throughout the reserve, with guides on hand to point out some of the incredible highlights.

The park also hosts night tours for wildlife enthusiasts who want to catch a glimpse of the incredible creatures that come out when the sun has set.

The reserve also offers accommodation for those who plan to stay the night.
