National Museum of Flight offers survival skills course learnt by wartime pilots

Visitors at the National Museum of Flight will be taught a number of survival skills with their new classes on what to do if your plane crashes.

The East Lothian attraction will be sharing some of the tips and tricks used by wartime pilots after their planes were downed in enemy territory.

From October 19-22, the workshop will teach both adults and children outdoor lessons, such as lighting a fire with flint and steel and tying the knots used to set up a tarp and hammock.

Designed to teach children something new over the October break, the wild camping sessions will take place in the Concorde hangar, with participants challenged to set up a 'leave no trace' camp.

With a wartime ethos, the sessions will also feature some more hands on skills, including how to use a knife safely to set up camp.

Speaking about their latest venture, Steve McLean, General Manager at the National Museum of Flight, commented:

“We’re really excited to be hosting Survival Skills at the museum this half term, offering a fun day out for all the family, as well as skills to last a lifetime.

"With the increased interest in wild camping, particularly in Scotland, we hope that visitors of all ages will be inspired by what they learn. It’s fascinating to think of the pilots who have used these skills in the past, which remain useful today, whether exploring the wilds, or just in the back garden.”

Funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery, the sessions are suitable for anyone over the age of five, with both activities free but requiring a ticket booking in advance.
