National Museum in Edinburgh is holding FREE summer autism-friendly workshops

It can be hard for parents to find things to with their kids in the summer and even more so for parents of children with autism.

That's why it's great that the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh are putting on three autism-friendly workshops this summer for youngsters and their families.

The events, which will run in July and August, will be organised around a quiet time - often outwith public opening times - at the beginning or end of the day and group numbers will be kept to a minimum.

Staff leading the workshops will have ASN/autism training and the activities will be tailed around specific learning styles and support needs.

The museum will also provide backpacks with items including fiddle toys and noise cancelling headphones.

There are also quiet breakout spaces at the museum and lighting can be altered, as well as interactives turned off and the sensory stimuli reduced.

What's on?

There are three workshops taking place, which are:

  • Thursday 25 July -  Inclusive music workshop and sing-a-long with Tinderbox collective.
  • Thursday 1 August - Art session inspired by Vikings, exploring museum objects and take part in creative, sensory activities.
  • Friday 9 August - Kids can reach for the stars in our space-themed science exploration.
