National media agree on Eddie Howe as Newcastle United confirm appointment

Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Eddie Howe as their new manager.

Howe has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at St James’ Park and after an extensive few weeks of talks, becomes Steve Bruce’s successor, as well as the first managerial appointment of the PIF-led era.

The 43-year-old will be joined in the dugout by coaches Jason Tindall, Stephen Perches and Simon Weatherstone, while current caretaker manager Graeme Jones will also remain at the club among Howe’s backroom staff.

Howe had been out of a job for just over 15 months following his departure from Bournemouth, a place where he spent eight years as manager.

During his spell on the South Coast, he guided the Cherries to two promotions and an impressive five-year spell in the Premier League.

Here is how the national media have reacted to his Newcastle appointment.

BBC Sport

BBC Sport reporter Phil McNulty, said: “He will have things to prove because, while much of his work at Bournemouth was outstanding, he was not without flaws.

“Howe prided himself on the progressive style he employed at Bournemouth, but it was eventually undermined by those rearguard failures. In the season before they went down, the Cherries conceded 70 league goals in finishing 14th, the highest total conceded outside the relegated clubs with even Cardiff City, who went down, conceding fewer.

“It was a warning that went unheeded and contributed to the unfulfilling end to a reign in which so much was achieved. He cannot afford to make that mistake again at Newcastle."

Telegraph

On his official Twitter, Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph said: “I think Eddie Howe is a very smart appointment by Newcastle and pairing him with Michael Emenalo would be even smarter….”

The Athletic

The Athletic’s George Caulkin said: “Very encouraged and, yes, excited about Eddie Howe’s appointment at #NUFC. What a massive job he’s got, but looking forward to see what he can do with this squad.”

The Times

Henry Winter of the Times said: “With Eddie Howe, #nufc are getting a manager who’ll engage immediately with the players, dedicate himself totally, work tirelessly and prepare the team assiduously. Howe’s a fighter and that’s what Newcastle need now in a relegation scrap. Good luck to him. But they need defenders.”
