National Lottery issues warning to Irish players as EuroMillions heads for biggest jackpot ever

The National Lottery has warned Irish players must continue to observe social distancing rules.

It comes as the EuroMillions top prize hits a staggering €180 million tonight, in what would be one of the biggest wins in history.

But it could get even better, as the lottery is heading for what would be its biggest-ever jackpot of €200 million.

Since the EuroMillions began in 2004, only three jackpots have seen winners of a €190 million top prize.

And officials have confirmed that if nobody wins tonight, next Friday's draw could see us hit the €200 million mark for the first time.

However Lotto chiefs have also issued a word of warning to players across the country to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines - despite the excitement.

A National Lottery spokeswoman said: "We have been communicating with our retail partners and there is feeling of palpable excitement among our players ahead of tonight’s €180 million draw.

"With draws at this level, we would expect a big surge of interest from our players in the hours leading up to tonight’s draw.

"We are asking all of our players to continue to follow the health guidance currently in place and to buy their tickets early in-store, in-app and online at www.lottery.ie.”

The top four EuroMillions jackpot wins to date are:

  • €190 million: Won in the UK in October 2019
  • €190 million: Won in Portugal in October 2014
  • €190 million: Won in the UK in August 2012
