National Lottery issues warning over scam involving text messages

Lotto bosses have issued a warning about a text messaging scam that's doing the rounds.

The scam involves users receiving a fraudulent text message that claims to be from the organisation.

In a statement, the National Lottery said they believe these messages are part of a phishing scam that's looking to obtain personal information.

"The National Lottery has been made aware that members of the public have received text messages which purport to be from the ‘Lotto’. These text messages are not from the National Lottery and are likely to be a phishing scam," said the National Lottery in a statement on social media.

It adds: "The National Lottery will never text you to ask you to provide any sensitive or personal information via text message. If you have received this text message, please do not open it, or click on the link provided. Instead, you should delete the message immediately.

For those that may have already clicked and opened the text message, the Lottery has said: "Any player who has opened the ‘Lotto’ text message and clicked on the link or provided passwords or personal information should change any passwords immediately. If you have provided any banking information, it is essential you urgently contact your bank to ensure your banking details have not been compromised."

The organisation has also released a photo of the fraudulent text message so the public can be aware of what to expect.
