National League seek legal advice over end of the season decision

The National League have announced that their season is now on hold indefinitely.

Play was originally scheduled to get back under way in the National League and National League North and South on April 3, but the competition's board has now opted to suspend the campaign for the foreseeable future.

The division was the last professional football to be played in England, with games last being held on March 14, which is when the EFL and Premier League seasons were initially suspended.

Yet the decision to keep playing was met with criticism from some club officials.

Premier League players could isolate together to complete season

The National League eventually took the decision to suspend the season until April 3, but, with the number of coronairus cases rising, a resumption by this weekend was not going to be possible.

A statement has now been released confirming an indefinite suspension and revealing that the league are now taking legal advice over the best way to conclude the campaign.

The statement said: "The National League Board met earlier today and has reviewed its prior decision to suspend the competition until at least 3rd April 2020.

"In consideration of the very serious and unprecedented national public health emergency caused by the coronavirus, the Board has taken the decision to suspend the National League, National League North and National League South competitions indefinitely.

"The National League is currently obtaining specialist legal advice, is consulting regularly with The Football Association and other stakeholders, and is committed to involving its member clubs in a pending decision on how best to conclude the 2019/20 season."
