When is National Handloom Day 2026?
National Handloom Day is celebrated every year on August 7.
The date commemorates the Swadeshi Movement, which began on August 7, 1905. The movement encouraged the use of indigenous products and gave fresh impetus to domestic industries, including handloom weaving. The Government declared August 7 as National Handloom Day in 2015.
The first National Handloom Day was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai in 2015.
PM Modi urges citizens to support weavers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday marked National Handloom Day by highlighting India's rich weaving traditions and recognising the contribution of weavers and artisans.
In a post on X, Modi praised generations of craftspeople for preserving the country's traditional textile heritage and said the government would continue supporting the handloom sector. He described handlooms as an important part of rural empowerment, women-led development and the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
