National Geographic reporter shot while interviewing drug supplier in Juarez

DALLAS _ A National Geographic reporter was shot in Juarez while interviewing a drug supplier targeted by a group of assassins Saturday morning.

The reporter, who has not been identified, was shot in the leg, El Paso's KTSM-TV reported.

Police told KTSM's partner station across the border that the reporter and crew were interviewing the drug supplier at a south-side home when the four killers showed up. The reporter was wounded in the ensuing gunfire, the news station said.

Chihuahua Deputy Attorney Jorge Nava Lopez said the state was reviewing the reporter's video equipment for possible footage of the incident.

Authorities said police had not been notified of the National Geographic crew's presence and thus had provided no protection.

The reporter and crew were escorted back to El Paso, the station said.

Cartel-related violence has spiked this year in Juarez, the station reported, with 129 related murders in August alone.
