National Doughnut Day: what happens when you put a cronut in a blender?

Dessert fans across the US celebrated National Doughnut Day on Friday with the release of Dunkin' Donuts' Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich. The sandwich is a sweet doughnut, sliced down the middle and stuffed with bacon and a fried egg. What is more shocking than Americans' apparently boundless culinary creativity is that the sandwich contains only 360 calories, according to Dunkin' Donuts.

The more refined pastry connoisseur, however, can seek sugary delight with the highly sought-after cronut. The trademarked (yes, actually) croissant-donut hybrid is only available in New York, and people have been lining up hours before pastry chef Dominique Ansel's bakery opens to get their hands on the pastry before it sells out in the early hours of the morning.

This week, I commemorated donut day for Guardian US for the second year in a row by enduring the hour-and-a-half long cronut line. While standing in line, I listened to people explain how this is an "important" moment and heard some compare the donut to a celebrity. Those of us waiting were also asked to take a psychology research survey for crazy people who wait in long lines for pastries.

We solicited suggestions from our readers on how to enhance (or debase) the cronut, and while none advocated filling it with fried meats, many were in favor of pulverizing it. So, here it is: the blended cronut – with bourbon.
