National day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II and Grand Final Eve public holiday to create four-day weekend in Victoria

Victorians will have a four-day weekend thanks to a national day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II falling the day before the Grand Final Eve public holiday.

The national public holiday on Thursday, September 22 was announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese this morning.

This year Victoria's Grand Final Eve public holiday is scheduled for Friday, September 23 ahead of the grand final the next day.

The public holiday to mark the Queen's death will also fall on what was scheduled to be the Victorian parliament's final sitting day before the state election this November.

The Victorian government has confirmed parliament will adjourn for a week as a mark of respect, with a special sitting held this Tuesday so members of both houses can be sworn in by oath or affirmation under King Charles III.

After that, parliament will not sit again until Tuesday September 20, which is in line with the plan for the NSW parliament.

On that day, both houses will sit solely to carry a motion of condolence for the late Queen.

The Victorian parliament was due to return to other business on Wednesday, September 21 and Thursday, September 22, but the latter coincides with the day chosen for the national day of mourning.
