National Cyclo-cross Championships title joy for Perth's Rory McGuire

Rory McGuire’s trophy cabinet is struggling for space.

And the Perth High School student’s latest crown was a particularly special one.

He claimed Junior gold at the prestigious National Cyclo-cross Championships, recently held in the English town of Shrewsbury.

McGuire built his lead steadily as the race progressed, crossing the line well clear of second-placed Oli Stockwell and Corran Carrick-Anderson.

“I didn’t really have a race plan but just found myself having a small gap after the start and went from there,” McGuire explained.

“I was pleased as I won by a considerable margin - even with a puncture - compared to other races where it has been closer.

“It was a target of mine all season so I’m happy to win.”

Despite his successes, McGuire is always keen to improve.

He added: “Many cross races are in Belgium and Holland and the courses are very sandy there, so I think I could improve riding on sand.”

Preparations are now underway for a trip to Switzerland for the World Championships next month.

“I am racing in a World Cup in Holland the weekend before so that is perfect preparation for the worlds,” McGuire said.

“I don’t really feel pressure when racing in the world events, but it is an awesome experience as the crowds are huge at most races.”
