Florida law enforcement agency turns over Pulse shooter probe to state attorney

ORLANDO, Fla. _ The Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials finished its investigation in the death of Omar Mateen, who was killed by law enforcement after the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history.

The report has not been made public.

FDLE officials on Wednesday gave their findings to Jeff Ashton and the Office of the State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit, who will now decide whether any charges should be brought.

"We will evaluate the use of force and whether it was appropriate under Florida law," said state attorney's spokeswoman Angela Starke. "We will not be looking at the officers' responses and tactics. Just the use of force."

The FDLE said the case will remain an open investigation until prosecutors make their decision, meaning they will not release their findings. Starke said prosecutors do not yet know when their review will be finished.

Mateen's June 12 attack on the Pulse nightclub left 49 people dead and more than 50 injured.

He was killed after a three-hour standoff with officers. An autopsy showed he had bullet wounds to his head, chest, abdomen, and right lower leg and foot, as well as some bruising and scrapes.

This FDLE investigation sought information only about Mateen's death, not other actions of officers from the Orlando Police Department and Orange County Sheriff's Office, FDLE spokeswoman Molly Best said.
