Medical examiner: Lou Pearlman's death caused by heart infection

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Boy band promoter Lou Pearlman died of bacterial endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart, according to a medical examiner's report.

Pearlman died Friday in a hospital near the Miami Federal Correctional Institution, where he was serving a 25-year sentence for fraud.

The infection was caused by complications of an aortic valve replacement, the medical examiner's report shows. Diabetes was listed as a contributing cause.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Department did not perform a full autopsy on Pearlman, but did do an external examination on his body.

Florida law does not require an autopsy to be performed on every person who dies.

Pearlman helped drive the boy band craze in the late 1990s and early 2000s, managing the careers of groups such as the Backstreet Boys and 'NSync.

He was sent to prison in 2008 after some of his business ventures were exposed as one of the largest Ponzi schemes in Florida's history.
