Nathaniel Clyne explains Liverpool absence after serious injury

Nathaniel Clyne has opened up on his injury nightmare that saw him lose his Liverpool place to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Crystal Palace right-back returned to his first club in the summer after leaving the Reds on a free transfer.

Clyne was a regular at Liverpool after signing from Southampton in 2015.

However, a serious injury saw him ruled out for over a year, which offered Alexander-Arnold a route into the side after breaking through the academy.

The Reds' homegrown talent has now established himself as one of the world's best right-backs, making it impossible for Clyne to regain his place in the team.

Having spent six months on loan at Palace at the end of the 2018/19 season, an ACL injury saw him ruled out for the entirety of their Premier League title win too.

Reflecting on his time at Anfield, Clyne explained the difficulties of losing his spot in the team.

"At the start of my LFC career I was playing regularly and then, unfortunately, I got a big injury," Clyne told Sky Sports.

"It set me back for a while and then the team did ever so well. It was difficult for me to get back in and back into the mix of things.

"I had to go out on loan to get some game time and then I was disappointed to get injured again.

"It's not nice to be out injured, especially when there's loads of games and competition that you're missing out on."

He added: "In the summer I was training by myself. I had a personal trainer to keep fit. You have to stay positive.

"As soon as my agent told me Palace were interested I was delighted."
