Nathaniel Atkinson opens up on 'dream' Hearts deal as defender reveals desire to test himself in Europe

Nathaniel Atkinson has revealed he is fulfilling a lifelong dream by moving to Hearts because he's always wanted to play in Europe.

The 22-year-old signed a three-year-deal with the Jambos and is due to arrive in Edinburgh, once red tape issues are resolved.

The Australian will follow in the footsteps of midfielder Cammy Devlin, who became part of Robbie Neilson's squad in the last transfer window.

Atkinson, a defender, is expected to be available for the return to Premiership action against St Johnstone on 18 January.

He shared an emotional farewell to Melbourne City fans as he prepares to start a new life at Tynecastle.

"It’s always been a dream of mine to play in Europe, and while I’m sad to be leaving City, the time has come to test myself overseas and I hope that I can make everyone proud back home," he said.

"Since joining City as a 15-year-old, it has been an incredible journey.

"I have had some amazing memories from my time there and being part of the first men’s team to win a Premiership and Championship for the club is something I will never forget.

"City fans have been amazing. I will never forget their support at last season’s Grand Final and I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me."

Melbourne’s director of football Michael Petrillo sees Atkinson as the blueprint for the club’s transfer model when it comes to homegrown talent.

He added: "Nathaniel is a fitting example of a player who has come through our Academy system, has proven himself at a professional level in Australia and now can test himself in Europe.

"It has been incredibly rewarding watching him develop both as a player on the pitch and as a young man off the pitch.

"Everyone at the club wishes Nathaniel good luck and he is always welcome at Melbourne City."
