Nathanael Mbuku emerges as Celtic transfer target as Hoops 'approach' France rising star

Celtic have reportedly approached Stade de Reims youngster Nathanael Mbuku as they look to bring a new winger to the club in January.

Foot Mercato claim the 18-year-old has emerged as a transfer target for the Parkhead side, but is also being pursued by Villarreal and Parma.

The teenager impressed for France at the Under-17 World Cup in 2019 and has since become a regular in Ligue 1.

And the French outlet believe Celtic have made an offer for the rising star as he attracts interest from around Europe.

Neil Lennon is keen to add strength and depth on the wings which has been a problem area during the first half of the season.

James Forrest has been ruled out since September with an ankle injury, while Mikey Johnston is not long back from a long lay-off.

Mohamed Elyounoussi, who is due to return to Southampton in the summer, has been Celtic's only recognised wide man for the majority of the campaign.

Lennon is hopeful Johnston and Forrest will play a major role the rest of the way, but the club are looking at players like Mbuku to ensure their options on the wings are bolstered.

He told Celtic TV: "We have missed those two this year. They are exceptional talents, individual talents and they can change the dynamic of the way we play.

"Mikey has had a poor luck of run with injuries so it's good to see him back and flourishing again.

"Jamesy is not a million miles away now which is huge because he's been such a pivotal player over the years."
