Nathan Lyon takes 400th Test wicket as Australia romp to victory in Ashes opener

Nathan Lyon became just the third Australian bowler to take 400 Test wickets, reaching the milestone as his side completed a comprehensive nine-wicket win over England in the first Ashes Test.

Lyon has had a long wait for his 400th Test wicket, having taken his 399th wicket 326 days ago against India.

He joins Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne as the third Australian to have reached the landmark, with McGrath taking 563 Test wickets and Warne picking up 708.

After bowling nine wicketless overs in England's first innings, Lyon was then frustrated in his attempts to make a breakthrough on day three as he ended with figures of 0-69 from 24 overs.

However, he did not have to wait long on day four, getting Dawid Malan caught by Marnus Labuschagne for 82 in his second over of the day.

Speaking on TV commentary, Adam Gilchrist said: "Nathan Lyon, his 400th Test match wicket. It's been a long time coming.

"He's had to be patient, he's toiled, he's worked hard and let the celebrations begin."

Warne was quick to congratulate Lyon on reaching the milestone, tweeting: "A huge congratulations to Nathan Lyon on his 400th test wicket today at the #GABBA.

"He’s been a terrific bowler for a while now. Let’s hope there’s plenty more wickets to come."

In fact, Lyon went on to end the Test with 403 wickets, picking up 4-91 from his 34 overs.

Travis Head, who was named player of the match for his magnificent 152, was full of praise for Lyon after the game.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Head said: "He is a fantastic bowler, came back strongly for his. He deserves all of the praise coming his way."

Australia are now 1-0 up in the series and will head to Adelaide for the day-night Test full of confidence.
