Nathan Lyon becomes third Australian bowler to take 400 Test wickets

Nathan Lyon's long wait for a 400th Test wicket is over, with the off-spinner achieving the feat when he dismissed Dawid Malan in his second over on day four of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba.

Australia went on to win the Test by nine wickets.

Lyon had bowled 33 wicketless overs in the Test and waited almost a year since his last Test dismissal to achieve the milestone.

He managed it in the fourth over of the day with Malan (82) edging onto his pad for Marnus Labuschagne to take a sharp catch under his nose at silly point.

"It's something that I am very proud of, there's no doubt about that," Lyon told ABC Sport.

"There's been some hard toil to get it, but it's very rewarding, that's for sure."

England was eventually dismissed for 297, with Lyon finishing with the figures of 4-91 in the tourists' second knock, giving him 403 Test wickets.

Lyon is now only the third Australian bowler to take 400 Test wickets, behind Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563), who are both retired.

The veteran's quest for a 400th scalp proved a talking point throughout the 2020/21 summer, when Australia failed to bowl India out at the SCG and Gabba.

The tweaker was stuck on 399 wickets after his 100th Test proved unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, with India storming to a series victory in Brisbane in January.

A postponed Test tour of South Africa meant Australia was forced to wait almost 11 months for a chance to don the Baggy Green again.

Lyon admitted last month the milestone had been on his mind for a "fair amount of time".

The 34-year-old has charted a remarkable path to the top of world cricket, famously working as a curator in Adelaide when given a chance to shine in Australia's domestic Twenty20 competition at the start of 2011.

Later that year, Lyon made his Test debut in Sri Lanka and took the wicket of Kumar Sangakkara with his first delivery.
