On season 2 of The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder tried to figure out why planes crash. He gave us the idea that if a co-pilot could feel comfortable talking to the pilot, we could maybe avoid plane crashes as a whole.
During the show, Fielder examined “The Miracle on the Hudson” for its successful landing. He turned to Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and rehearsed Sully’s entire life from birth to the “Miracle” in order to understand how Sully was able to listen to his co-pilot to successfully land the plane on the Hudson River. The episode ended with Fielder proposing the idea that Sully listened to Evanescence’s “Bring Me to Life” in the 23 seconds of silence that exists on the recording of the cockpit.
But now, Fielder’s once “sweet” obsession with Sully is turning dark. Fielder, who is now a pilot thanks to his time on The Rehearsal, was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about the finale of season 2. And it seems as if his tune on Sully has changed a bit. Meaning now that he has landed a plane himself, he’s pushing a more competitive narrative.
When Jimmy Kimmel spoke about Fielder’s landing on The Rehearsal, Fielder called it the “Miracle Over the Mojave.” Kimmel asked if people were calling it that and Fielder said he saw some people calling it that and out of the crash-landings known as “miracles,” he thinks his is the best.
“I mean, not to create a competition or anything, but I did put down my plane safely on land,” Fielder said to Kimmel. Which the host jokingly replied “So you’re one up on Sully for sure.” But then Fielder went on to seemingly throw some shade at Sully, a man he knows incredibly well now that he has recreated his entire life for the show.
“Us pilots, we just show up to work and we’re just doing our job,” Fielder said. “And, like, I wouldn’t call myself… I’m not calling myself a hero, but if people say that…” Kimmel then replied “I would say you’re a hero” and Fielder said “Well, yeah, that’s fair.”
So if you had hope that Fielder and Sully would be friends with each other, it might be a long battle for that friendship to recover. Or maybe Captain Sully will laugh at Fielder’s comedic ways and silliness and confirm that he did, in fact, listen to the course of “Bring Me to Life” as his pump up music.
