Nathan Carter opens up to Tommy Tiernan about toughest part of singing career

Nathan Carter opened up about the "tough" side of his job as a singer.

The country music star used to have a gruelling tour schedule which could see him performing up to 200 times a year.

And although reducing the amount of shows significantly, the constant touring can be a struggle.

The 29-year-old said: "Ten years on the road, I wouldn't have taken more than two weeks off a year. When I started out I was doing 200 gigs a year.

"The last few years I've kind of narrowed it down to about 130/140 gigs a year which is tough. It's tough going.

"And then the tour bus thing is tough. It's very easy to get into a routine of staying up til three in the morning drinking as well which is pretty tough and I have to watch that because it can get a grip on you very quick.

"So I'll do two nights of staying up and then try and Netflix the rest."

The Wagon Wheel singer was speaking on The Tommy Tiernan Show on RTE One last Saturday night.

And when asked by the host if he was dating anyone, he admitted: "No not at the minute no.

"I have had through the years but not at the minute."

He also told how he often feels lonely and can get down after touring, but he tries to keep busy to ensure his head is in "good shape".

He said: "I would [get lonely] yeah, I mean after - they say there's after tour blues or something, I don't know there's a phrase for it - but I definitely get that, if I've been away for a month or six weeks and then come back and you kind of think, 'what am I doing?'

"I go to the cinema, cry. No I go and watch movies. I love watching films.

"But I hate being on my own, I always make sure I'm with someone or doing something. I hate being on my own.

"I won't stay in the house on my own, I'll go and visit friends, go cinema, go shopping, go to the gym.

"I try and go to the gym three or four days a week now. It keeps my head in good shape."
