Natasha Kaplinsky reveals 'trauma' of seeing daughter suffer severe burns during boating accident

Natasha Kaplinsky has revealed the trauma of seeing her young daughter suffer horrific burns in a boating accident.

The former TV newsreader said she had to undergo psychotherapy to process the ordeal, which happened during a family holiday in Corfu last summer.

She and her then eight-year-old daughter Angelica suffered severe facial burns after the boat caught fire during the accident. They had to be airlifted to hospital having been stranded at sea for 45 minutes.

Opening up about her suffering on ITV's Loose Women on Monday, the 46-year-old said: “There’s nothing worse than being a mum and seeing your child injured.

“I just kept looking at her and her face, just thinking about her wedding day.

“It’s just one of those moments where you think ‘I can’t bear it’.”

But 10 months after the accident, Ms Kaplinsky added: “Nearly a year on, having had a lot of help, and a lot of support from friends and amazing doctors, are OK. But we were all airlifted home and it was very, very traumatic at the time.”

She revealed she underwent eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), a type of therapy designed to offset traumatic memories.

It is often used by war veterans and Ms Kaplinsky said: “It helped to move the trauma from the immediacy of what was happening in front of me – which was that we were all on a burning boat in the middle of nowhere – to a bit further away in my mind.”
