Natasha Jonas rubbishes low fight purse claims for Katie Taylor bout

Natasha Jonas has rubbished suggestions that she only earned €25,000 from her fight with Katie Taylor.

The Liverpudlian and Taylor fought it out in a fantastic battle on Saturday night in Manchester, with the Bray fighter winning via unanimous decision after the bout went the distance.

A Twitter user claimed that Jonas and Taylor only received £22,000 (€25k) and £34,000 (€39k) respectively for the fight in comparison to over €2million each for Joseph Parker and Derek Chisora, who collided in the main event on the night.

But Jonas replied to a tweet, saying that the figure was not correct.

She said: "Mine is not true. I can confirm that at least."

Jonas' trainer Joe Gallagher has urged Taylor to fight 'Miss GB' again in her next bout.

He told Sky Sports: "I've heard people say, 'Katie has got lots of mandatories.' Yes, she has, but when there is a demand for a rematch, they have to step aside while this is unfinished business."

He added: "Financial-wise, everything-wise, everything looks to Natasha Jonas and Katie Taylor, and I think Natasha Jonas - that's the logical fight for Katie. It was that close a fight."

Taylor hit back at suggestions she was on the decline after Saturday's win as she took aim at her critics.

She said: “My performance showed that I’m definitely not on the decline, that’s for sure.

“There was obviously a lot of talk in the week from Joe but after the fight it is all respect. I had the most respect for Joe and Tasha coming into this. I was just completely focused on the fight itself.

“These are the kind of fights you train for. I just love a bit of a tear up too much than I should. My favourite fights are (Marco Antonio) Barrera against (Erik) Morales, Arturo Gatti against Micky Ward, these kind of fights.

“I don’t want to be involved in too many of those fights but sometimes in the heat of the moment it’s hard not to trade back. Another great fight and another great win.”

On who she would like to face in the future, the undisputed lightweight champion said: "There’s so many big fights out there for me. I’m willing and ready to step in. Jessica McCaskill is a big, big fight. Jumping back into a big fight like that would be fantastic.

"Amanda Serrano would be a great fight. There have been big names being thrown out there and I’m OK to fight any of those big fights."

But Eddie Hearn is planning to take Taylor to the home city of her favourite football team Leeds in September.

He said: “She has about seven mandatories lining up. I want her to box on a huge show I'm doing in Leeds on September 4.

“I'd like her to fight on that card because she's a big Leeds fan as well, so that's next.

“Then I want to either rematch Natasha Jonas or fight Amanda Serrano in December.”
