Nat Phillips shines for Liverpool against Wolves as Takumi Minamino struggles explained

Here is your Liverpool morning digest on Tuesday, March 16.

Phillips stars for Reds in win against Wolves

Nat Phillips was once again Liverpool's star defender as Jurgen Klopp's side climbed to sixth with a 1-0 win over Wolves.

Diogo Jota's strike on the stroke of half-time was the only goal of the game at Molineux, as the Reds attacker came back to haunt his former club.

Phillips and Ozan Kabak helped keep Liverpool's second clean sheet in a row after last week's 2-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

The former was given the ECHO's man of the match - with an 8/10 rating - after helping to shut out Wolves, who didn't cause Liverpool too many problems on the night.

But when they did, Phillips was there to head away anything he could and helped defend some dangerous crosses from the flanks to earn his side a much-needed three points.

However, two negatives for Klopp will be the performances of Thiago Alcantara and Gini Wijnaldum.

Thiago looked massively off the pace from the start and was making constant fouls before being taken off in the second-half.

As for Wijnaldum, he struggled to get on the ball at Molineux, but did set up a big chance for Sadio Mane.

Minamino struggles explained

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has explained why Takumi Minamino was taken off in his side's defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.

The Liverpool loanee, who joined the Saints on a temporary deal in January, has had a mixed start to life down on the south coast.

Minamino scored two goals in his first three games for an out-of-sorts Southampton side, but has now seen a few games pass him by.

However, when explaining why the 26-year-old attacker was taken off against the Seagulls at the weekend, Hasenhuttl put it down to his team's performance rather than for an individual reason.

Speaking to Hampshire Live, the Saints manager said: "It is difficult for him now, because the team is not in the best shape.

"He always shows his quality on the ball, but against Brighton he did not have the biggest impact on the game, this is why I chose to substitute him and bring a fresh player on for him."

Southampton face Bournemouth in the FA Cup at the weekend, but Minamino is cup-tied so will be forced to take a back seat after playing for Liverpool earlier in the competition.

With the international break edging closer, the Japan international won't feature for the Saints again until April or beyond.
