The accident occurred just after 7:30 p.m. on June 8, when Smith’s Chevrolet Silverado collided with Dobbins in a marked crosswalk on 3rd Avenue North. Eyewitnesses described a scene of confusion and horror as bystanders rushed to help the well-known local woman, who was walking her dog at the time. She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died of her injuries.
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Smith “failed to yield” to the pedestrian — a key factor in the fatal accident. Investigators say Smith showed no signs of impairment and remained on scene, visibly shaken, and fully cooperative with law enforcement.

Conner Smith, just 24, has been hailed as one of country music’s fastest-rising talents. Born and raised in Nashville, Smith gained viral fame with his 2021 breakout hit “I Hate Alabama.” His fresh blend of storytelling and pop-country charm landed him a record deal with Big Machine’s Valory label, and he’s since toured with Luke Bryan and performed at the Grand Ole Opry.
Smith released his debut album “Smoky Mountains” in January 2024 and married surfer Leah Thompson earlier this year, with fans following their romance across social media. He was also featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming film Twisters, further solidifying his stardom.
A community shaken
The crosswalk where the tragedy occurred has long been a concern for Germantown residents, who say poor signage and blocked visibility make it a danger zone. Locals described it as a “death trap” that drivers frequently ignore.
Now, with a life lost and a prominent figure involved, those long-ignored warnings are gaining urgent attention.
What’s next for Smith?
As of now, no charges have been filed, but investigators say the case remains active. Smith has hired attorney Worrick G. Robinson, who released a statement on his client’s behalf: “Mr. Smith is devastated by this accident. His thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Dobbins’ family.”
Police say further decisions, including potential charges or citations, will be made in the coming weeks as the investigation into the Conner Smith crosswalk accident continues.
This heartbreaking incident has cast a dark cloud over Nashville’s music scene. What should have been a night of celebration turned into one of tragedy. As fans and neighbors mourn the loss of Dorothy Dobbins, attention now turns to the systemic safety issues that may have played a role, and to what accountability may look like when a rising star is at the center of a devastating loss.
