Nashik Municipal Corporation’s property tax up 22% in current financial year

NASHIK: The property tax collection of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has increased by around Rs 24 crore to touch Rs 132.32 crore during the current financial year — as against the collection of Rs 107.75 crore during 2021-22.

The civic body’s collection of property tax was severely affected during the previous fiscal due to the Covid pandemic. But various measures taken by the NMC — like amnesty scheme and issuance of warrants for confiscation of properties — led to adding Rs 24 core in the coffers of the civic body.

An NMC official said they had set a property tax collection target of Rs 140 crore for the current financial year and there is still a week remaining for the current financial year to end. “Hence, we expect to collect around Rs 10 crore by March 31,” the official said.

“We had introduced an amnesty scheme for almost four months — between August 15 and December 15 — in the current financial year, giving up to 90% concession in penalty and interest on tax dues to the defaulters. The NMC collected around Rs 27 crore through the amnesty scheme,” he added.

Another important factor that led to rise in property tax collection despite the second and the third waves during the current financial year was that the NMC linked the property tax with the town planning department.

This helped the civic body to bring new properties under the tax net once the Occupancy Certificate (OC) is given to builders by the town planning department. The online system of building plans submission and approval do not allow issuing of BCCs until the builder concerned pays the tax on the land of the buildings. This has also helped the NMC to increase its revenue to some extent.
