NASA warns asteroid as big as Edinburgh's Tron Kirk will shoot past Earth closer than the Moon

A huge asteroid due to shoot past Earth has been listed by NASA on its Close Approaches database.

The 2011 ES4 space rock will pass by the Earth at some 18,253mph, and it will be closer to us than the Moon according to scientists.

Experts think the space rock is around 49 metres, and it was first observed in 2011. Edinburgh's Tron Kirk - one of the tallest buildings in the capital, is 52 metres high.

NASA has not listed as a threat to our planet, but it has been registered on their list of Near Earth Objects as "potentially hazardous".

It will pass by planet Earth around 0.00048 astronomical units away, the equivalent of 44,618 miles.

That mean it will come far closer to Earth than the Moon, which is around 238,855 miles away from us.

It is the closest asteroid on the list complied by NASA.

It's not the first such asteroid to pass us by this year. We reported in June how a rock larger Arthur's Seat was due to shoot past Earth at 11,200mph.

Estimated to be between 250m and 500m tall, the asteroid was listed by SpaceReference.com as larger than 90% of all others.

This and other asteroids are tracked constantly by NASA alongside the European Space Agency to monitor any risk they might pose to Earth.
