NASA's Juno captures STUNNING photo of 'intensely dark vortex' on Jupiter

Jupiter may be over 365 million miles away from Earth, but thanks to NASA ’s Juno spacecraft we’re regularly given glimpses of its surface.

The latest image captured by Juno shows an ‘intensely dark’ vortex swirling across Jupiter’s surface.

The incredible photo was taken at 12:55 PDT on May 29, during Juno’s 20th flyby of Jupiter.

At the time, Juno was around 9,200 miles from Jupiter’s cloud tops, and at approximately 52 degrees north latitude.

NASA explained: “NASA’s Juno spacecraft captured this view of an area within a Jovian jet stream showing a vortex that has an intensely dark centre.

“Nearby, other features display bright, high altitude clouds that have puffed up into the sunlight."

Juno has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016, and has the primary goal of revealing the story of Jupiter's formation and evolution.

If you want to track where Juno is, you can use NASA’s Eyes on the Solar System tool to track the spacecraft.
