Nasa reveals major new mission to explore Saturn's largest moon Titan

Nasa has announced details of a new space mission to Saturn's largest moon Titan.

This is being done in a fresh bid to explore the wonders of the solar system.

Titan is deemed similar to early earth and the mission will analyse the celestial object.

Dragonfly, a golf-cart sized drone with four propellers, will embark on an eight-year mission in 2026 to Titan.

Jim Bridenstine of Nasa said the mission will "explore the frontiers of human knowledge for the benefit of all humanity".

He said: "Today, I am pleased to announce that our next new frontiers mission, Dragonfly, will explore Saturn's largest moon, Titan.

"Titan is unlike any other place in our solar system. and the most comparable to early earth."

He added: "Dragonfly will be the first drone lander with the capability to fly over 100 miles through Titan's thick atmosphere.

"Titan is unlike any other place in our solar system and the most comparable to early Earth.

"The instruments on board will help us investigate organic chemistry, evaluate habitability and search for chemical signatures of past or even present life.

"This revolutionary mission would have been unthinkable just a few short years ago."

The agency gave details in a conference this evening, which was streamed live on the agency's website and social media.

It had promised a "major new science mission to explore our solar system".

The drone lander Dragonfly is designed to fly through the atmosphere of Titan.

It has components inside, to be protected when necessary, and able to explore in the extreme cold.

The space agency says Dragonfly will fly from location to location over Titan.

By doing so it will explore future potential landing sites.

The mission, part of NASA's competitive New Frontiers Program, beat out another possible project to collect samples from a nearby comet.

Titan is a haze-covered world and has lakes of methane and an ocean below the surface.

Scientists have long considered Titan an attractive place to study, in a bid to see whether it would be capable of supporting microbial life.

Titan was last explored by the Cassini-Huygens mission.

In 2017, the Cassini spacecraft plunged into Saturn, ending two decades of exploration.
