NASA moves 380ft launcher from Hurricane Dorian's path as storm packs 140mph winds

A NASA space centre has been preparing for what could be the first time it is directly hit by a major hurricane.

, which has maximum winds of nearly 140mph, is currently making its way to the north-west Bahamas and is expected to reach Florida early next week, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

The weather service has described the storm as "life-threatening" with "devastating hurricane-force winds".

To prepare for the category four storm, NASA crews at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida were faced with the enormous task of moving a 380-foot-tall launcher inside.

Video footage from NASA shows the 10.5-million-pound mobile launcher, which is used to prepare and launch rockets, crawling along as crews prepare for Hurricane Dorian yesterday.

A 6.6-million-pound crawler transporter was used to move the structure to a vehicle assembly building at the space centre.

According to the space centre, the transporter travels at around 1mph and takes eight hours to go from the launch pad to the vehicle assembly building.

The Vehicle Assembly building is said to be designed to endure winds of 125mph.

As of 5am today, the National Hurricane Center said devastating hurricane-force winds are likely in portions of the northwestern Bahamas, and these winds are still possible along portions of the Florida east coast by the early to middle part of next week.

But Dorian is forecast to slow down and turn northward near the coast, so it is too soon to determine when or where the highest surge and winds will occur, the hurricane centre reported.

It advised residents to have a hurricane plan in place and know if they are in a hurricane evacuation zone.
