NASA is making an announcement about the moon today - what time is it at and how can you watch in the UK?

NASA is set to make an announcement about the moon today.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration teased space fans last week when it said that it had made an "exciting new discovery".

But no extra details have been released.

In a statement, NASA said: "This new discovery contributes to NASA’s efforts to learn about the moon in support of deep space exploration.

"Under NASA’s Artemis program, the agency will send the first woman and next man to the lunar surface in 2024 to prepare for our next giant leap – human exploration of Mars as early as the 2030s.

"Understanding the science of the moon also helps piece together the broader history of the inner solar system."

The big announcement is set to take place today at a teleconference made from the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).

SOFIA is a modified 747 plane that flies high in the atmosphere and is the world's largest airborne observatory.

The briefing will feature Paul Hertz, astrophysics division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington; Jacob Bleacher, chief exploration scientist for the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters; Casey Honniball, postdoctoral fellow at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre; and Naseem Rangwala, project scientist for the SOFIA mission at NASA's Ames Research Centre.

It will take place at 12pm EDT today (Monday 26 October), which is 4pm UK time.

There are multiple ways you can watch the announcement from the UK.

You can watch it on NASA's YouTube channel  here  at 4pm and it will also stream the audio live on the NASA Live website here.
