NASA confirms time of Wednesday's super blood moon in Ireland - and where it will be visible to observers

NASA has confirmed that on Wednesday, May 26, people in certain parts of the world will be able to get a glimpse of the “most super” of the year’s supermoons - the blood moon.

This means the full moon will enter Earth’s shadow and it will appear much bigger and brighter than usual with a red tint.

For those who don't know, a super blood moon occurs when the “Moon travels around our planet in an elliptical orbit, or an elongated circle”, according to the space agency.

“Each month, the Moon passes through perigee (the point closest to Earth) and apogee (the point farthest from Earth).

“When the Moon is at or near its closest point to Earth at the same time as it is full, it is called a “supermoon.”

Observers all over the world will be able to see the only total lunar eclipse of 2021 at different times of the night if the sky is clear.

Like all full moons, the supermoon rises in the east around sunset and sets in the west around sunrise.

The moon will arrive at perigee at 1:55 am Irish time on May 26 and officially turns full 9 hours and 19 minutes later - however, it has been confirmed that it will not be visible over Ireland this time.

However, it will be visible in the western continental United States and Canada, all of Mexico, most of Central America and Ecuador, western Peru, and southern Chile and Argentina.

Along the Asian Pacific Rim, the total eclipse will be visible just after moonrise.

For those of us in Ireland who won’t be lucky enough to catch the phenomenon, there are a number of live streams taking place so you don’t miss out:
