Snowboarder Gurimu Narita won the bronze medal in the men's snowboard cross (SB-LL2) at the Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics on Monday.
In the bronze medal race, the 24-year-old defeated Evan Strong of the United States.
Narita, a native of Osaka Prefecture, is the youngest of three snowboarding siblings. Both brother Domu Narita and sister Melo Imai competed at the 2006 Turin Olympics.
Narita's initial goal was to compete in the halfpipe event in men's freestyle skiing at the Olympics. But he seriously injured his left leg while practicing on a trampoline in 2013, leaving him with partial paralysis in his knee area and derailing those plans. He eventually returned to the sports arena as a Paralympian. Matti Suur-Hamari of Finland won the gold and Keith Gabel of the United States won the silver.
