Liverpool FC defender Andrew Robertson has deactivated his Twitter account following Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Napoli in their Champions League opener.
Robertson fouled Jose Callejon in the box in the 80th minute, allowing Dries Mertens to give Napoli a late lead which they then doubled through Fernando Llorente in injury time.
Although the award of the penalty has been subject of much debate, with Callejon appearing to dive into Robertson’s leg, a defender with his experience should perhaps not have so rashly stuck out his leg.
The Scot had been struggling throughout the game, having previously been booked for a cynical shirt pull on Callejon. He also committed four fouls in the match, the most by a player from either side.
Defeat in their opening game appeared to rile some Liverpool’s sufficiently to direct online abuse towards Robertson, who was seen as the main antagonist in the club’s downfall in Naples.
Robertson, who was named in the PFA Team of the Year and UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season in 2018/19, has responded by deactivating his Twitter account.
This is not the first time that the Liverpool fanbase has come under scrutiny for their social media activities.
Loris Karius was subject to a volley of abuse after the 2018 Champions League final where he made two costly mistakes.
