Chelsea beat Napoli thanks to Joao Pedro’s impressive second-half brace to secure automatic progression to the Champions League round of 16. The Blues came into the match knowing they required three points to dodge the play-offs and led early by way of an Enzo Fernandez penalty, but trailed by half-time after goals from Antonio Vergara and Rasmus Hojlund. They overcame Antonio Conte’s injury-ravaged Napoli late in the second half, though, as Joao Pedro equalised with a long-range stunner before putting Chelsea in front by finishing from Cole Palmer’s perfectly weighted through-ball.
Faced with a hostile atmosphere and a stubborn opponent, this is a win the Blues can take genuine heart from. So too can Liam Rosenior, who attempted a misguided experiment with his lineup but was decisive with his substitutions, with half-time substitute Cole Palmer picking up two assists on his return from injury.
Napoli have been rather kneecapped by injuries this season, and this match was no different. They were without some seven first-team players on the night, and two of their seven substitutes were goalkeepers, rather limiting Antonio Conte’s options. Catch up with the action as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, with expert insight and analysis from Dom Smith.

21:44 , Arthur FerridgeWhat a night this has been for Chelsea, and for Joao Pedro in particular. He showed such composure there, having shown brutal finishing for his first.
GOAL! Napoli 2-3 Chelsea | Joao Pedro '82

Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:41 , Arthur FerridgeA promising-ish Chelsea attack is brought to a close, first by Garnacho’s wayward cross and second by the revelation that the Argentine was offside anyway.
Napoli make changes: Lukaku comes on.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:40 , Arthur Ferridge80mins: The former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who left west London in such acrimonious circumstances, is being readied to come on for Napoli.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:39 , Arthur Ferridge80mins: Yet more bad news for Chelsea from elsewhere as Inter have taken the lead away to Dortmund, putting them ahead of the Blues in the table.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:37 , Arthur Ferridge78mins: Di Lorenzo will soldier on. Chelsea are still facing a play-off as it stands, and time is quickly running out for them to find a goal.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:36 , Arthur Ferridge75mins: Di Lorenzo is injured and does not appear to be able to continue.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:33 , Arthur Ferridge74mins: Estevao nicks the ball from Buongiorno, but somehow manages to foul the Napoli man before he can get a shot off. That is his last contribution, too, as he comes off for Garnacho.
Dom Smith reports
21:32 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea have raised their level and are the ascendent team now. A sense, I think, that this injury-plagued Napoli team are tiring now.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:32 , Arthur Ferridge72mins: Garnacho materialises on the touchline and will be coming on for Chelsea, presumably in place of Estevao. He’s scored important late goals for the Blues before. Can he get another here?
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:30 , Arthur Ferridge71mins: McTominay is fit to continue.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:30 , Arthur Ferridge70mins: Another break in play as McTominay is down injured in the Chelsea box.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:29 , Arthur Ferridge70mins: Vergara has been superb here. He picks Gittens’ pocket and plays Spinazzola in behind to win a corner from Chalobah.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:28 , Arthur Ferridge69mins: More bad news for Chelsea. Barcelona are pulling away from Copenhagen. Raphinha has made it 3-1 at the Nou Camp.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:26 , Arthur Ferridge67mins: A change for Napoli here as the ex-Real Madrid man Gutierrez replaces Juan Jesus.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:26 , Arthur Ferridge67mins: Fernandez sees his name in lights, perhaps excited by Joao Pedro’s earlier effort. The Argentine’s floats over the bar.
Napoli 2-2 Chelsea
21:23 , Arthur Ferridge64mins: Chelsea remain outside the top eight here, but goals are flying in across the continent. One more, though, and they should step back into the automatic progression places.
Dom Smith reports
21:22 , Arthur FerridgePalmer may hardly have had a touch, but what a superb touch that was from Joao Pedro. It's an absolute screamer from the Brazilian... his best yet for Chelsea. A fine, fine moment of inspiration that gets Chelsea immediately back on the hunt for victory in Naples.
GOAL! Napoli 2-2 Chelsea | Joao Pedro '61
21:20 , Arthur FerridgeJoao Pedro, what a strike! The Brazilian hits a stunning leveller from nowhere! He drills it into the top corner from some 25 yards out.
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
21:18 , Arthur Ferridge59mins: Changes for Chelsea, sorely needed.
Chalobah and Gittens replace Gusto and Santos.
Dom Smith reports
21:17 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea need to offer so much more than this. Has been a fair while now since they last created a meaningful chance, and Napoli are comfortable in possession. Rosenior needs to switch it up, or his players need to do so themselves.
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
21:17 , Arthur Ferridge57mins: Chelsea are struggling to get the ball in the first place, but struggling especially to get it to the feet of Palmer and Estevao, theoretically the flair players you would expect to help get the Blues back into contention here.
As it stands, though, the visitors can barely get near Napoli.
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
21:13 , Arthur Ferridge53mins: Napoli make their first proper attack of the second half and already look far more threatening than Chelsea have this evening. Just perfectly assured. Fofana is very much struggling to contain Hojlund’s physicality.
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
21:11 , Arthur Ferridge51mins: Chelsea are dominating possession in the early stages of the second half but are yet to go anywhere threatening with it. Napoli seem perfectly comfortable with the pace of play.
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
21:09 , Arthur Ferridge49mins: Should really go without saying that Chelsea need a goal sooner rather than later if they are going to take anything away from this. If they want to skip the knock-out play-offs, they really do need a win. A draw may not be enough, and a defeat definitely won’t cut the mustard.
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
21:08 , Arthur Ferridge48mins: Vergara cuts out a Chelsea pass at the back and breaks at impressive pace, but is himself disposessed by Fofana before he can play Hojlund in.
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
21:07 , Arthur Ferridge48mins: Palmer slips as he gets his first touch of the ball.
2ND HALF: Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
21:04 , Arthur FerridgeBack underway at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Liam Rosenior rolls the dice, introducing Cole Palmer in place of Pedro Neto.
Fan reaction
20:56 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea's buildup has been very haphazard. Napoli has successfully disrupted them from getting the ball to Enzo Fernandez in advanced positions. H/T: Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
20:49 , Arthur FerridgeA scrappy end to the first half, and the Blues head back to the changing room trailing. Liam Rosenior’s men have it all to do...
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
20:47 , Arthur Ferridge45mins: Three minutes added on to the end of the first half.
Dom Smith reports
20:46 , Arthur FerridgeA reminder to English football of Hojlund's quality. That's how the Dane will see it, aside from the obvious: that it gives Napoli a fine chance of staying in this competition as things stand. It's a ruthless finish by Hojlund. Chelsea have plenty of work to do now.
Napoli 2-1 Chelsea
20:46 , Arthur Ferridge45mins: CHANCE! Neto puts a great cross in for Joao Pedro, who heads over from the edge of the six-yard box. That should have been an equaliser.
GOAL! Napoli 2-1 Chelsea | Hojlund '43
20:44 , Arthur FerridgeBad to worse for Chelsea - Hojlund makes it two! Now the Blues really have work to do...
Napoli 1-1 Chelsea
20:42 , Arthur Ferridge41mins: Caicedo slips a nice ball in behind for Estevao, but Jesus is first to it - just.
Napoli 1-1 Chelsea
20:41 , Arthur Ferridge40mins: Vergara the goalscorer shoots wide from the edge of the area after McTominay’s pass. He scored his first senior goal from the club a few minutes ago - why shouldn’t he try to make it a brace!
Napoli 1-1 Chelsea
20:40 , Arthur Ferridge39mins: Good news from around the grounds. Bodo/Glimt haev equalised against Atletico, which puts Chelsea back into the top eight!
Napoli 1-1 Chelsea
20:39 , Arthur Ferridge38mins: Suddenly, Chelsea seem to have their composure back. Go figure. They are pressing to restore their lead now.
Dom Smith reports
20:36 , Arthur FerridgeThat is a sensational Napoli equaliser, and a very first senior goal for Vergara. And he's a local Neapolitan, too. Fofana should hold him up far better there but he won't care. Fine, fine leveller.
Napoli 1-1 Chelsea
20:36 , Arthur Ferridge35mins: Well then. It is back to square one for Chelsea. They know they need three points tonight but have been well off the pace since scoring. They are now outside the top eight...
GOAL! Napoli 1-1 Chelsea | Vergara '33
20:34 , Arthur FerridgeNapoli equalise! It is Vergara with his first senior goal... a wonderful solo effort capped as he fired home after beating Fofana with a Maradona turn.
Napoli 0-1 Chelsea
20:33 , Arthur Ferridge32mins: Rosenior gives Reece James some extra instructions as a Napoli player goes down to receive treatment.
Dom Smith reports
20:31 , Arthur FerridgeThere's a real zip about Chelsea's start to this game and they are decent value for the lead that Fernandez penalty has provided them. Napoli are fighting to stay in the Champions League, but you wouldn't know it judging by their slightly inconsistent start to the game.
Napoli 0-1 Chelsea
20:29 , Arthur Ferridge28mins: Di Lorenzo gets in behind far too easily as he chips over the Chelsea back line and gets on the end of his own pass, but his shot from a tight angle is saved by Sachez.
Napoli 0-1 Chelsea
20:28 , Arthur Ferridge27mins: Lovely ball over the top from James seems to have Neto in behind. He burns Olivera, but can’t quite do anything productive with the ball as he is closed down by Meret.
Napoli 0-1 Chelsea
20:27 , Arthur Ferridge26mins: A cross to Hojlund is thwarted by James. This is getting worrying for Chelsea, who have hardly had a sniff since going in front.
Napoli 0-1 Chelsea
20:26 , Arthur Ferridge25mins: Rosenior looks apoplectic on the touchline, yelling animatedly at one of his Chelsea players.
Napoli 0-1 Chelsea
20:24 , Arthur Ferridge23mins: Reece James throws his body on the line to block Olivera’s shot. Remarkably brave defending.
Napoli 0-1 Chelsea
20:23 , Arthur Ferridge22mins: The hosts continue their impressive reaction after going behind. Sanchez gets down quickly to put Spinazzola’s cross out for a corner.
Dom Smith reports
20:21 , Arthur FerridgeThat is a fine spot-kick from Fernandez, who thumped the ball with some Lampard-esque power there.
Napoli 0-1 Chelsea
20:21 , Arthur Ferridge20mins: Napoli look for an immediate response as Sanchez saves from Olivera.
GOAL! Napoli 0-1 Chelsea | Fernandez '18
20:19 , Arthur FerridgeFernandez makes no mistake from the spot. Chelsea maintain their perfect penalty record on the season.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:18 , Arthur Ferridge17mins: VAR check underway, but it seems the penalty will stand. Conte looks flabbergasted.
PENALTY! Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:18 , Arthur Ferridge17mins: Penalty to Chelsea! James’ free-kick catches the arm of one in the wall, and the referee points to the spot without hesitation!
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:16 , Arthur Ferridge15mins: Joao Pedro is caught on the back of the leg by Juan Jesus and Chelsea are handed a free-kick about 30 yards from goal, dead centre.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:15 , Arthur Ferridge14mins: Around the grounds, Erling Haaland has broken his goal duck to put Man City 1-0 up against Galatasaray.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:14 , Arthur Ferridge13mins: Gusto’s cross is cleared by Buongiorno. Chelsea turning the screw a bit now.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:12 , Arthur Ferridge11mins: Santos heads at goal from Estevao’s cross, but Meret catches it with ease.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:12 , Arthur Ferridge11mins: Chelsea are facing their greatest enemy: the low block. As the Blues (who are wearing black tonight) come forward, their hosts have ten men behind the ball.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:10 , Arthur Ferridge9mins: McTominay struggles back to his feet and will continue.
Dom Smith reports
20:10 , Arthur FerridgeI thought Joao Pedro's hold-up play, particularly his aerial flick-ons, was as strong against Palace on Sunday as I have seen during his time at Chelsea. He's started well in that regard tonight too, and will need to keep that up as Chelsea seek to progress up the pitch.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:08 , Arthur Ferridge7mins: McTominay puts heavy pressure on Sanchez as Chelsea look to play outfrom the back, and takes the full force of his long-ball to the face. He is crumpled on the floor in the penalty area and is receiving treatment.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:07 , Arthur Ferridge6mins: Good news for Chelsea from around the grounds as Barcelona have gone behind against Copenhagen!
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:06 , Arthur Ferridge5mins: Neto makes a smart run forward but his cut-back is wayward and Napoli recover possession.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:05 , Arthur Ferridge4mins: Hojlund and Fofana are in a footrace chasing a loose ball and the former fouls the latter. Chelsea look to make their first proper foray forward and Joao Pedro hits the deck but does not get the free-kick he was after.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:04 , Arthur Ferridge3mins: Back underway, and Di Lorenzo continues.
Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:02 , Arthur Ferridge1mins: Immediately another injury worry for Napoli as Di Lorenzo takes a tumble and seems to be in some discomfort.
KICK-OFF! Napoli 0-0 Chelsea
20:01 , Arthur FerridgeWe are UNDERWAY in this crunch Champions League clash!
The players are out...

Napoli's prospects
19:40 , Arthur FerridgeWhile Chelsea are fighting to dodge a play-off today, they will still go through in one form or another regardless of tonight’s result.
Should Napoli come away with a draw or a defeat this evening, though, they could be eliminated from the Champions League altogether.
They sit outside the play-off places as it stands and will need a win to keep their dreams alive.
Rasmus Hojlund
19:38 , Arthur FerridgeRasmus Hojlund starts for Napoli this evening, but how is his record against Chelsea?
In four meetings with the Blues, all representing Manchester United, the Dane has come away with one win, one draw, and two losses.
He has never scored against Chelsea, but does have one assist.

You can follow...
What is on the line tonight?
19:30 , Arthur FerridgeA reminder of what is at stake here.
All 32 teams in the Champions League play simultaneously tonight.
Chelsea currently sit eighth and must finish in the top eight to confirm automatic progression to the round of 16 without requiring a two-legged play-off.
A win should be enough, but given the number of teams tied with the Blues on 13 points, their final place in the standings will likely come down to goal difference.
Get ready for constantly shifting permutations this evening...
Classy touch from Rosenior
19:25 , Arthur FerridgeRosenior sends his best wishes to the two Chelsea fans who were hospitalised last night after a run-in with some Napoli ultras.
He said: “It is important for me to say, we had a couple of fans out who ended up in hospital supporting us, so I wish them a speedy recovery and I wish them all the best.”

Dom Smith reports
19:20 , Arthur FerridgeIt will be pleasing for Chelsea fans who have made the trip to Naples to see the return of Cole Palmer, who has missed the last two games with a thigh strain since scoring and lasting the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over Brentford. But there is only a place in the bench for him tonight. It is no surprise to see Enzo Fernandez keep his place in midfield but he also keeps that No10 slot as well given Palmer isn't starting.
Rosenior previews the tie
19:15 , Arthur FerridgeOn dwelling on his rise from Strasbourg to Chelsea: “I haven’t had any time to do that! It has been really enjoyable. In football you want to work at the highest level, and I have enjoyed my first few weeks. To be honest, its the same job in terms of the work you do day to day. I think outside things, the media, the extra interviews, the press conferences, you just take it in your stride.”
On a successful start to his Chelsea career: “I think it has been a positive start. The players in terms of their engagement, their attitude, I think they’ve enjoyed it too, but we need results. This is a big night for us and it is a huge test, and if we can pass it it gives us a great chance of being in the top eight.”
On Napoli: “They are very good in transition and the press. They have outstanding players, including Scott (McTominay) and (Rasmus) Hojlund as the nine. It is a difficult game and we are prepared tactically for it.”

New role for Reece James?
19:08 , Arthur FerridgeReece James appears to be starting as a centre-back this evening.
He has been deployed primarily as a right-back, his natural position, and as a midfielder this season.

Chelsea transfer latest
18:40 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea confirmed a long-awaited transfer story today.
Raheem Sterling has left the club by mutual consent after a season-and-a-half of toiling in the bomb squad, interrupted by a fruitless loan to Arsenal.
Sterling posted on Instagram after the news was confirmed: “All eyes on the future. God is great.”
He is now a free agent and reportedy open to offers from within the Premier League and abroad.
Chelsea’s statement read: “Raheem Sterling has today departed Chelsea Football Club by mutual agreement, bringing to an end three-and-a-half seasons as our player, having signed in the summer of 2022 when he was transferred from Manchester City.
“We thank Raheem for the contribution he made while a Chelsea player and wish him well for the next stage in his career.”

Napoli vs Chelsea preview
18:34 , Arthur FerridgeFacing Napoli in the Champions League evokes plenty of memories for Chelsea supporters, writes Dom Smith.
The Blues’ return to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona tonight after 14 years is just the third meeting between the teams, but the first two have a proud place in Chelsea’s history.
Having lost 3-1 in the away first leg in Naples in February 2012, Chelsea recovered and prevailed from their Champions League round of 16 tie with a 4-1 win the following month, having hired Roberto Di Matteo as interim manager in the intervening weeks. Chelsea went on, of course, to win their first European crown.
Courtesy of the new Champions League format, there is less jeopardy involved tonight yet still reward to be enjoyed by Liam Rosenior’s team if they can get it right in Italy.
Chelsea sit eighth in a congested table ahead of the final round of games, knowing if they win well and other results go their way then they will confirm one of those all-important top-eight spots that secures automatic qualification to the last 16.
Conte at Chelsea
18:26 , Arthur FerridgeAntonio Conte enjoyed considerable success with Chelsea, winning both the Premier League and FA Cup in a three-year spell with the side.
His record playing against the Blues, though, is not quite so good. He has won just two of his seven meetings with his former club, and only once in the last 14 years.
His three defeats by Chelsea all came, unsurprisingly, during his time in charge of Tottenham.
And who could forget his infamous spat with Thomas Tuchel after that testy 2-2 draw back in 2022?
