Napoli forward Dries Mertens is likely to face the wrath of Liverpool fans tonight, after mocking the club's famous 'This is Anfield' sign.

The Belgian will be part of the Napoli side that takes on Liverpool tonight, with qualification for the Champions League knockout stage on the line.

The iconic sign hangs above the exit of the tunnel at Anfield, with many Reds players choosing to touch it on their way onto the pitch as part of a long-standing superstition.

Mertens first visited Anfield in a Europa League tie while playing for Utrecht eight years ago, and says he barely noticed the sign because it was so small.

"My strongest memory is that they have a sign saying 'This is Anfield' and everyone was talking about it," Mertens told The Times. "I came through the tunnel and I asked, 'Where is the thing?'

"They said you missed it and I hadn't noticed it.

"So in the second half, I'm looking at this small thing and asking, 'Is this so special?'"
