Valor Mortis, the Napoleonic Soulslike game from Ghostrunner developers, is hosting a public playtest early next month. This free first look will let players who've signed up try the title out and see how all those different genres blend with the Napoleonic setting.
To sign up for the playtest, all you'll have to do is go to this link and log in via Steam or Discord, and then enter your e-mail, and that's about it. You'll be added to the waitlist for the pre-alpha test, running from Oct. 6 to 13. And it's not a small chunk of gameplay, either, with the devs promising testers a good part of Valor Mortis' introductory parts.
The test will encompass “the game’s complete introductory chapter, including a boss fight, mini-boss, 10 levels of player progression, and the first section of the upgrade tree,” the developers said, while several player contests will be held parallel to the test, including “speedrun, fan art and screenshot contests.” And it's free, so do not miss out on taking the game for a spin ahead of its 2026 release window, with the exact date yet to be determined.

Valor Mortis follows William, a Grande Armée risen from his battlefield grave. He navigates an alternate Napoleonic Europe where plagues and disease grip the land. A strange substance, Nephtoglobin, grants William untold powers, but also corrupts most of those who interact with it, including his former brothers in arms. The game is structured much like a Soulslike, with boss fights and combat mastery playing a central role.
During Gamescom 2025, Destructoid gave Valor Mortis its “Best Gamescom 2025 Announcement Award,” praising its incredible looks, inspired setting, and grotesque monsters that look straight out of an Umbrella Corporation lab.
