Police late on Friday were still investigating the shooting of a man at an address in Napier suburb Marewa 24 hours earlier.
The 38-year-old's leg injuries, clearly visible to onlookers in Nuffield Ave as he was carried to an ambulance, were not life-threatening, and Hawke's Bay District Health Board staff reported about midday Friday he was in a stable condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital in Hastings.
Hawke's Bay Today sources said the man was not thought to have been a resident at the address, opposite the entrance to Seddon Cr and backing onto Whitmore Park, and may have been concreting at the property.
But police said they could not confirm it and that the team investigating were still trying to determine all the relevant details.
Police became aware of the shooting when called to the address about 3.30pm on Thursday.
Soon afterwards, armed police cordoned off a sector of Nuffield Ave between Seddon and Massey crescents and an ambulance arrived about an hour later after standing by as crew awaited instructions from police.
Most of the officers, who did not appear to include the Armed Offenders Squad, stood down about 4.50pm, soon after the departure of the ambulance transporting the shorts-wearing man - whose injuries were clearly visible to onlookers as he was carried from the address on a stretcher.

The western end of the cordon was extended momentarily to Ward Cr, but the full length of Nuffield Ave was soon reopened and police remained at the address carrying out scene examinations into the evening.
In response to questions from Hawke's Bay Today, police did not disclose whether any firearms or other items of interest were found at the scene.
Police also said late on Friday there had still been no arrests, but did not reveal if they were seeking anyone specific.
