Naperville announces 2016 telecommunicator of the year

April 16--A 32-year police department veteran has been named the city of Naperville's 2016 telecommunicator of the year as part of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

Mike Rafferty has worked as a telecommunicator since Nov. 9, 1983. A fellow worker nominated him for the award, citing Rafferty's "strong connection to the community, his dedication to public education and his exemplary focus on teamwork," according to a police department release.

Rafferty "has demonstrated his dedication to 911 and public safety," his letter of nomination read in part. He has served on the city's Public Education Team and "has been able to share his passion for teaching children and adults how to stay safe and correctly use 911."

"Mike's knowledge of Naperville, its history and geography are unparalleled," the letter said. "He is always willing to assist in any way possible to keep things running smoothly."

The award was formally bestowed on Rafferty on Tuesday as part of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, which ended Saturday.

The city's telecommunication employees are recognized during the week "for their roles as critical links between those in need of assistance during an emergency situation and the police officers, firefighters, paramedics, public works and utility crews that respond," according to the release.
