Naomi Osaka triumphs in nail-biting return to professional tennis

Naomi Osaka won her comeback match after becoming a mother.

Covered in a thin layer of nervousness, Naomi Osaka triumphantly made her comeback to the professional tennis circuit on Day 1 of the year. It wasn't an easy feat, but Osaka managed to check off two items on her list by securing a hard-fought victory in the first round of the Brisbane International. The former world No. 1-ranked player encountered some bumps along the way but ultimately emerged victorious with a 6-3, 7-6 (9) win over Germany's Tamara Korpatsch.

A two-time Australian and US Open champion, Osaka's journey took an unexpected turn when she withdrew from last year's Australian Open in Melbourne. Little did the tennis world know that Osaka was embarking on a different kind of challenge – motherhood. In July, she and her partner, rapper Cordae, welcomed their daughter Shai into the world in Los Angeles.

After a long hiatus from the sport, Osaka played only one game since her first-round exit at the 2022 US Open. Unfortunately, her comeback match was not without its share of nerve-wracking moments. Serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set, Osaka faltered and was broken by Korpatsch. It took three match points and a gritty performance from Osaka in the tiebreaker to secure her hard-earned victory.

Reflecting on her journey, Osaka spoke about her renewed perspective on tennis and life. The 26-year-old Japanese athlete has learned to cherish the present moment and appreciate the love and support she receives from fans. In her own words, 'The last couple of years, I didn't return as much love as I was given. So I really feel like that's what I want to do in this chapter.'

Osaka's triumphant return to the court marks the beginning of a new chapter in her career. As she joins a stellar lineup of players at the Brisbane International, including reigning Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jelena Ostapenko, Victoria Azarenka, Sofia Kenin, and Sloane Stephens, Osaka is determined to make her mark on the tennis world once again.

The Brisbane International serves as a crucial tune-up event ahead of the Australian Open in Melbourne. With each powerful serve and swift stroke, Osaka aims to make her presence felt, showcasing her indomitable spirit and unwavering determination.

As tennis fans eagerly watch Osaka's journey unfold, her return to the sport brings with it a wave of excitement and anticipation. With her newfound focus and appreciation for the love she receives, Osaka is poised to make waves and captivate audiences worldwide.

Stay tuned for more thrilling matches and awe-inspiring performances as the Brisbane International unfolds, leading up to the pinnacle of tennis – the Australian Open. The stage is set, and Osaka is ready to play her part in this enthralling chapter of her career.
