Naomi Osaka continues US Open title defence with straight sets victory over Magda Linette

Naomi Osaka continued her defence of her US Open title with a routine victory over Magda Linette to reach the third round.

Osaka overcame a difficult obstacle in her first round match against Anna Blinkova after recovering from a set down to beat the Russian.

But this was a far more straightforward process for the 21-year-old, who looked far more confident and assured as she downed the Pole.

The Japanese had faced unseeded Linette before, defeating the 27-year-old earlier this year on her way to her second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

Osaka secured an early break in the first and took the next five games to win the first set 6-1.

Linette provided a tougher test in the second set but Osaka eventually held on to seal a 6-1, 6-4 success in one hour and 11 minutes.

Osaka can breathe easier going into the third round after sixth seed Petra Kvitova crashed out in a a shock result, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Andrea Pektovic of Germany.
