Naomi Osaka booked her place in the Australian Open semi-finals after beating Elina Svitolina in straight sets.

The 21-year-old was in fine form from the very start, sealing three breaks in the first set and eventually cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory to reach the semi-finals.

It was far from a straightforward victory with both players struggling to make their serve count in the final stages of the first set, with five consecutive breaks.

However, Osaka was the main beneficiary at 4-5 when Svitolina failed to make her second serve stick and she took charge of the match with a third break in a row.

The US Open champion was rampant early in the second, breaking Svitolina in the second game and never looked back.

The 24-year-old Ukrainian was forced to call a medical timeout after suffering a recourrence of the shoulder injury that she picked up in earlier rounds and it seemed to affect her as Osaka marched on.

She managed to hold to avoid a bagel in the final set but Osaka hit her 31st and final winner with a fine smash to book her place in the last four for the first time in Melbourne.

The Japanese will face either Serena Williams or Karolina Pliskova on Friday.
