Naomi Campbell 'supports' Prince Harry and Meghan Markle over stepping down from royal duties

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has thrown her “support” behind Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who recently announced plans to step down from senior royal duties and split their time between the UK and North America.

Speaking to PA, Campbell said, “I support them whatever.”

Although Campbell and the Sussexes have never made a public appearance together, the supermodel does appear to have close ties to Princess Beatrice - whose wedding she attended last year.

She also previously defended the couple after it was announced that the Duchess of Sussex had launched a lawsuit against a media outlet over the publication of a private letter addressed to her father Thomas Markle.

In November, Campbell told The Guardian, “When I heard (she was taking legal action), I was like 'Bravo. Good for her.’”

She added at the time that she had yet to meet the Duchess of Sussex, but said she was “really glad she’s taken action to defend herself.”

Other stars to recently voice their support for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle include Jameela Jamil, Stormzy and Oprah Winfrey.

Last week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released a joint statement that they intended to become “financially independent” and to “make a transition” to “carve out a progressive new role within this institution.” They revealed that they would be stepping back as “senior” royals, but additionally would continue to “fully support Her Majesty The Queen” and that they also intended to split their time between the UK and North America.

Since then, Buckingham Palace revealed its discussions about the transition were at an “early stage” and Queen Elizabeth released a follow up statement.

In it, she revealed that the family were “entirely supportive” of the Sussexes and “respect and understand their wish” - adding that they “do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.”

She also continued that she “would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family” but continued that there were “complex matters to resolve”. She finished, “I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”
