Nani explains key role in convincing Bruno Fernandes to join Manchester United

Former Manchester United winger Nani has revealed that he convinced Bruno Fernandes to join the club.

Nani rejoined Sporting Lisbon in 2018 for his second spell, after first leaving the club in 2007 for United.

The Portuguese star would spend eight years with United, winning four Premier League trophies and one Champions League, before leaving in 2015.

Three years later, he would rejoin the Portuguese club where he started his career, and played alongside rising star Bruno Fernandes.

This season was to be Fernandes' breakout year in which he would command attention from some of the best clubs around the world, having scored 32 goals from central midfield.

Once becoming aware of Manchester United's interest, Nani spoke to teammate Fernandes and convinced him of where he should go.

Speaking to The Athletic, he said: "I was the first one to tell him he should go to England and if he decides to go to England, if he can choose Man United it would be the best thing for him.

"That was funny because a couple of months later when I went to Orlando I saw the news and I texted him because I was seeing Man City and Man United and Tottenham were fighting for him and I said, 'If you have to go, you choose Man United! It's the best!'"

The following season, United came calling and Fernandes chose join - with Liverpool also reportedly interested.

Since joining, the 27-year-old has been nothing short of sensational - scoring 44 goals and adding 33 assists in 96 games.

Nani is now plying his trade over in the United States, as captain of MLS side Orlando City.

He joked about returning to United to play alongside Fernandes, and former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, stating: "Maybe I can go there for one year, help win a trophy and then come back to my Orlando!"
